Our future scientist..

Yipee, our hard work. Let's cross our fingers now..

That's us.. displaying one of our school values.. graciousness.. we let others get the food first..
After a hard day's work.. we were rewarded with food... Though it was not a feast,.... we still had fun ...chatting together..

Our future scientists...

We cut up the leaves into 4 parts.. then, we put them in a petri dish. In it is, a jelly-like substance which was prepared earlier to give 'food' or nutrients to the leaves... This 'food' is to substitute the seed leaves...

More pictures fm our workshop

Firstly, we washed the leaves to get rid of the soil.
There you go, 6 leaves for the 6 of us.. We are going to use these leaves to grow a plant. Bet you didn't know we could do that huh? Most of us may think that we can only grow new plants from seeds and stem cutting .

Next, we dipped the leaves into alcohol (yikes.. I thought alcohol is not for under 18) ... Now,now don't worry, here alcohol is used to sterilise the leaves.. Then, the leaves are dipped into a bleaching agent.. Mmm.. but wat abt the hands and watches..What are they for? Well, we had Jymie and Swee Guan to help keep time.. otherwise, the leaves will 'die' for over sterilisation. We left the leaves in alcohol for 1 minute and in the bleach for 8 minutes.. (this process is called surface sterilisation..)
Finally, we 'rinse' the leaves in water.. Why?..... ask me in class and I will tell you.

Tissue Culture

Here are some of the pictures taken fm our 'Tissue Culture' workshop. I will leave it to the lucky 6 pupils to share about their experiences.. In the meantime, here are the gadgets used: Weighing machine to weigh the chemicals that we needed.
This is an 'Autoclave'. It is used to sterilise all of the apparatus required. Here, the water will be boiled at 120 degrees for 20 minutes..Do u know why?..

This is called a 'Laminar Flow'.- It is plaform where UV light is used to 'kill bacteria' as well as a place for us to 'prepare our tissue culturing'

This is where our final work is kept. This room is kept in a cool environment.. and artificial light is used to simulate day and night.. Can anyone guess how long the 'light' is given? Clue: Think in terms of 'mother nature'

PBL

Hello ladies and gentlemen,

As we embark on our PBL next week, I hope that you will enjoy yourself in our journey together. In PBL(Problem Based Learning), I will not be looking at the outcome of the product but I will be assessing all of you on your journey towards solving your 'problem'. Having been with you for the past 10 weeks, I have seen the many sides of you.. as you have seen mine. I feel that one of the things that we can all do better is our team spirit. We can learn to appreciate the strengths in each other and we can also learn to be patient with our weaknesses.

There is SO much talent in all of you..every single one of you! I can see future lawyers, future accountants, future scientists, future doctors, future politicians, designers, authors, cartoonists.. and many many more in you.
Before we make a difference in the world, let's learn to make a difference in the lives of every 45 of us..

You are all my pride..
Mrs S
